Washing soda

Washing soda is sodium carbonate, a strong alkaline mineral salt used to boost cleaning power and soften water. It is a staple for DIY laundry powders and household cleaning blends.

What it does

Sodium carbonate “softens” hard water by binding minerals. This helps other cleaning ingredients lift soil from fabrics and keep it suspended in the wash water. It also helps cut grease and improve overall cleaning performance.

How to use

• Dissolve in warm water first for even distribution.
• Start with conservative amounts in your recipe and adjust as needed.
• Avoid use on delicate fibres such as wool and silk, and test coloured fabrics and surfaces in an inconspicuous area first.
• Not recommended for use on aluminium or other reactive surfaces.

Safety and handling

Washing soda is strongly alkaline and can irritate skin and eyes. Wear gloves, avoid breathing dust, and keep out of reach of children and pets. If contact occurs, rinse well with water. Do not apply to skin or use in leave-on personal care. Do not ingest.

Environmental notes

Sodium carbonate is a naturally occurring mineral salt. In normal household use it breaks down to commonplace ions in wastewater. Avoid releasing large quantities directly into waterways.

Storage

Store sealed in a cool, dry place. Exposure to moisture may cause clumping.
