Microcare DB, Ecocert compliant

This product can be used as a direct substitute for Geogard 221. INCI is the same.

Microcare DB is a mild yet reliable broad-spectrum preservative suitable for a wide range of natural and ECOCERT-compliant personal care formulations. It is effective against bacteria, yeasts and moulds, making it a versatile option for both rinse-off and leave-on products.

Microcare DB has the same INCI as Geogard 221 and can be used as a direct substitute in formulations where Geogard 221 would traditionally be specified. This makes it a familiar and practical choice for formulators looking for a well-established preservative system.

This preservative system works through a combination of benzyl alcohol, which provides antibacterial protection, and dehydroacetic acid, which helps inhibit yeasts and moulds. Together, they provide broad-spectrum preservation when used correctly and within an appropriate pH range.

Microcare DB performs best in formulations with a final pH below 6, with optimal effectiveness typically seen around pH5–5.5.

How to Use Microcare DB

Microcare DB is typically added during the cool-down phase of formulation to help minimise evaporation of the benzyl alcohol component.

  • Usage rate: 0.2–1% of the total formulation
  • Recommended pH: below 6 (ideal around pH5–5.5)
  • Max working temperature: 60°C

Always ensure the preservative is fully dispersed and check the final pH of your product, as preservative effectiveness is strongly pH-dependent.

Microcare DB is suitable for formulations containing anionic, non-ionic and cationic ingredients and works well in emulsions and surfactant-based systems.

Preservatives are not required for fully anhydrous (water-free) products such as pure oils or balms, unless there is a realistic risk of water contamination during use.

Typical Applications

  • Face and body creams
  • Shampoos and hair conditioners
  • Styling gels
