Lactic acid 80%

Our lactic acid is naturally derived from the fermentation of corn and is supplied at a concentration of 80%. It is a popular and effective alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) widely used in both soapmaking and skincare formulations.

Soapmaking

Lactic acid can be used in cold process (CP) soapmaking to:

  • Lower pH slightly for a gentler bar
  • Help create a harder, longer-lasting soap
  • Contribute to smoother texture and better lather

Usage:
Use at 10g per 1kg of soap. Add to your lye water and mix thoroughly before blending with oils.

Skincare

Lactic acid is a milder AHA than glycolic acid and offers excellent benefits for:

  • Gentle exfoliation of dead skin cells
  • Improved skin texture and clarity
  • Hydration, especially for dry or flaky skin
  • Brightening dull, uneven complexions

It is generally well tolerated, making it suitable for more sensitive skin types than other AHAs.

Effective pH Range:
Lactic acid requires a low pH (2.0–3.5) to be effective as an exfoliant.
At pH 5.5 and above, it will no longer act as an exfoliating acid.

Suggested Use in Skincare:
Typical usage levels range from 0.5% to 12%, depending on the desired effect.

  • Use lower concentrations (0.5–3%) for mild daily use or hydrating toners.
  • Higher concentrations (5–10%) are common in wash-off masks or peels.

Always adjust the pH of your final product and patch test before broader use.

āš ļøĀ Sun Sensitivity Warning:
Alpha hydroxy acids like lactic acid can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. Always use SPF protection when using AHA-containing products, particularly those left on the skin.
