Isopropyl alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol
High-purity 99% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is a fast-evaporating solvent that dissolves many non-polar residues and leaves minimal residue. Commonly used for surface prep, cleaning, and as a soaperās tool.
Why formulators use it
- Quick evaporation for streak-free wipe-downs and fast dry-times.
- Excellent solvent for oils, waxy residues, and pigment wetting.
- Handy in soapmaking for popping bubbles, layer adhesion, and reducing soda ash.
How to use
Cold-process (CP) soap
-
Immediately after pour, lightly mist the surface with 99% IPA to help reduce soda ash.
Melt & pour (M&P) soap
- Pop bubbles: Fine mist over the surface straight after pour.
- Layer adhesion: Lightly spritz set layers just before pouring the next.
- Disperse colourants: Pre-wet micas/oxides/clays with a little IPA, then stir into melted base.
General formulation & making
- Surface prep: Wipe benches, tools, and containers before you start and after clean-up.
- Pigment wetting: Use small amounts to pre-disperse powders before adding to oil or M&P bases.
- Always test on a small area first; some plastics/finishes may be sensitive.
Common name: Isopropyl alcohol, rubbing alcohol
INCI: Isopropyl Alcohol
Purity: 99%
Appearance: Clear, volatile liquid with characteristic alcohol odour
Boiling point: ~82.5 °C
Flash point: ~12 °C (highly flammable)
Solubility: Miscible with water and many organic solvents
Vegan: Yes
Palm oil: No
Animal tested: No
Safety & handling
- DANGER ā Highly flammable liquid and vapour. Keep away from heat/sparks/open flames and hot surfaces.
- Irritant. Avoid contact with eyes/skin. Use in a well-ventilated area.
- Do not ingest. For external use only.
- Do not mix with oxidising agents (e.g., bleach).
