Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 (also known as ubiquinone) is a naturally occurring compound found in every cell of the body. In skincare, it is widely used as an antioxidant ingredient and is commonly included in formulations designed to support the appearance of healthy, resilient skin.

Levels of coenzyme Q10 in the skin naturally decline over time. For this reason, it is often added to serums and creams as part of well-rounded skincare formulations, particularly those focused on supporting skin comfort and overall appearance.

Coenzyme Q10 is oil soluble and is typically used in oil-based products or emulsions. It is valued not only for its antioxidant role but also for its vibrant colour and compatibility with a wide range of cosmetic ingredients.

Formulation notes

Coenzyme Q10 has relatively low solubility in oils. To incorporate it successfully, gently heat the oil phase to around 50°C and stir until the powder has fully dissolved. If separation occurs over time, gentle reheating will allow it to re-incorporate.

In emulsions, coenzyme Q10 can be added to the oil phase of hot-process formulations. For cold-process emulsions, it should first be dissolved in oil before combining with the rest of the formulation.

Colour & usage note

Coenzyme Q10 has a naturally strong orange colour. When used at higher percentages, this colour can transfer to fabrics such as clothing or pillowcases, particularly in leave-on products. For this reason, it is often used at lower concentrations in facial serums and creams, or reserved for night-time formulations.
