Calendula hydroethanolic extract

A New Zealand–made, water–ethanol calendula (Calendula officinalis) extract. Thin amber–brown liquid, readily dispersible in the water phase of skincare and haircare.

• Provides a plant-derived water-phase component for toners, gels, serums, and emulsions.
• Adds a subtle natural aroma/colour at low levels without heavily tinting most bases.
• The ethanol content can slightly speed dry-down and may lower viscosity in some systems—useful for fresh-feel mists/toners.
• Compatible across typical cosmetic pH (≈4–7) and with common water-phase ingredients.
• Easy to add in cool-down to help maintain clarity and aroma.

How to use

• Solubility: Water and alcohol soluble.
• When to add: Cool-down phase (typically ≤45 °C) to reduce aroma/colour shift.

Typical usage: 0.5–3% total formula.

• Toners/mists: 0.5–1%
• Gels/serums: 1–2%
• Creams/lotions: 0.5–2%
• Wash-off (cleansers/shampoo): 0.5–1%

Compatibility notes: The alcohol content can slightly thin some gel systems and affect viscosity; run a small test batch and adjust rheology if needed. May lightly tint very pale formulas.

Formulating tips

• Preserve the finished product as usual; do not rely on the extract for preservation once diluted.
• Add after emulsification/neutralisation and mix gently to maintain clarity/viscosity.
