Cold-Process Soapmaking REFILL PACK w/ Tallow
Cold-Process Soapmaking Refill Pack with Tallow
Palm free
A traditional favourite, reimagined for modern soapmaking. This refill pack features NZ-made cosmetic-grade tallow, prized for creating firm, long-lasting bars with a rich, creamy lather and gentle conditioning finish. Combined with coconut and olive oils, it delivers a beautifully balanced, skin-loving soap.
Makes approximately 10 x 100g bars. Contains all necessary ingredients (no mould or printed instructions included).
Equipment Needed:
A stick blender is essential. A thermometer is recommended.
Ingredients:
230g Tallow
230g Coconut oil
230g Olive Oil
104g Sodium hydroxide
30g Essential oil*
*unless unfragranced
+ Optional: Calendula, Oat or Honey
Please note:
It often comes as a surprise to some people that all soap contains sodium hydroxide, but it’s a necessary ingredient. Soap simply can’t be made without it.
Many companies list the end result of the saponification process instead, where sodium hydroxide has been chemically combined with oils. For example:
- Tallow + sodium hydroxide = sodium tallowate
- Olive oil + sodium hydroxide = sodium oleate
When soap is correctly formulated, no sodium hydroxide remains in the final bar — it’s been fully reacted and is completely safe to use.
However, if too much sodium hydroxide is used, or the mixture isn’t blended thoroughly, the soap may become brittle, have visible streaks of lye, and should not be used. On the other hand, using too little sodium hydroxide will result in soap that’s too soft and may not set properly.
Getting the ingredient proportions right is critical — each oil requires a different amount of sodium hydroxide to turn it into soap.
NOTE: The refill PACK does not contain manual instructions, or silicone loaf mould. Those are contained in the KIT, which can be purchased Cold-Process Soapmaking Kit w/ Tallow
